PAPER - I GENERAL STUDIES
- General Science.
- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography.
- Indian Culture, Indian Polity and Indian Economy.
- General Mental Ability.
- Haryana–Economy and people. Social, economic and cultural institutions and language of Haryana.
- History, Geography, Political, Art & Culture and Socio-Economic Development of Himachal Pradesh.
- Currents events of National and International importance.
- History of India and Indian national movement.
- Indian and World Geography-physical, social, economic geography of India and the world.
- Indian polity and governance –Constitution, political system, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and social development –sustainable development poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives, etc.
- General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and Climate Change –that do not require subject specialization.
- General Science.
Aptitude Test (200 Marks)

Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level).
HCS MAINS SYLLABUS (600 MARKS TOTAL)
ENGLISH AND ENGLISH ESSAY
The aim of the paper is to test the candidate’s ability to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express his ideas clearly and correctly in English.
The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows:
English—
(i) Precise Writing
(ii) Comprehension of given passages
(iii) Essay
(iv) Usage and Vocabulary.
(v) General Grammar / Composition Essay
Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.
HINDI AND HINDI ESSAY
(in Devanagari script)
(i) Translation of an English passage into Hindi.
(ii) Letter / precise writing
(iii) Explanation of Hindi passage (pose and poetry) in the same language.
(iv) Composition (idioms, corrections etc.)
(v) Essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given.

Personality Test / Viva-voce - 75 Marks
· Candidates thrice (three times) the number of advertised posts + bracketed candidates, if any, in order of merit in the main written examination will be called for Personality Test (Viva-voce).
